2021 Hall of Fame Inductee
Youngstown State University (1961)
Distinguished military graduate of Youngstown State University, Maj. (Ret.) Carl Nunziato, commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1961.
The next eight years would include three tours of combat to Thailand and Vietnam. During his service he earned many awards such as the Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Medal, among many others.
Nunziato’s service in the Army would come to a close in 1968 due to the loss of both legs in combat.
This would prove to be a new beginning for Nunziato. Following his honorable discharge, Nunziato enrolled in Case Western Reserve School of Law, where he earned his Juris Doctorate Degree in 1971. He spent the next 28 years as an attorney for Dollar Savings and Trust Company, Ohio Bank Corp and National City Bank.
He co-founded the Youngstown Chapter of the Governor’s Subcommittee for Barrier Free Architecture to construct wheelchair ramps for disabled personnel.
In the early 90’s, Nunziato prevented the closure of Youngstown State University’s ROTC program. He also helped to establish the Carl A Nunziato Veterans Center on the campus and an endowment providing $40,000 annually in scholarships for ROTC Cadets.
His character, service and achievements exemplify the spirit of “Duty, honor, Country.”
About the Army ROTC Hall of Fame
The ROTC Hall of Fame was established in 2016 as part of the ROTC Centennial celebration. The first class (2016) inducted 326 former ROTC Cadets who had distinguished themselves in their military or civilian career.
The Hall of Fame honors graduates of the Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps who have distinguished themselves in military or civilian pursuits. It provides a prestigious and tangible means of recognizing and honoring Army ROTC Alumni who have made lasting, significant contributions to the Nation, the Army and the history and traditions of the Army ROTC Program.
