FORT CARSON, Colo. — Fort Carson community members arrived at the Ellis Outdoor Pool Aug. 27, 2021, for the seventh annual Tropical Luau event held by the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (DFMWR).

The event was held in conjunction with Mountain Post Living activities according to event officials, which is why it was held on a Friday afternoon for the first time. Just under 200 Soldiers, Family members and civilians took part in the event, which saw activities at the pool and included youth and adult runs.

“When we started planning for this event, we thought it would be good to plan it around a Mountain Post living day,” said Rebecca Baden, event coordinator, DFMWR. “We thought this would be a good time for people to come out and enjoy the activities that we have planned for the Soldiers and their Families.”

There were activities for everyone at the luau, and people were excited to take part in each one. The swimming pool was a big draw as people sought to beat the heat from the 90-degree day and cool off with Family and friends. A caricature drawing tent, hairstyling tent and various other vendors were among the options available to attendees. This was in addition to the “Little Guppies” 1-mile youth fun run and the 5K adult run held at 5:30 and 6 p.m. respectively. The runs were followed by Polynesian musicians, flame throwers and dancers.

One Family member, Allison Parks, was very pleased to be at the event with her daughter who took advantage of the hair-braiding booth activities. Parks said she was very excited about the event and what it had to offer.

“This event is a great opportunity for Families to get out and enjoy it and the great weather we are having today,” Parks said. “We had a storm last night that seemed to just move the bad weather out and make today a great day for this event.”
