What is it?
Waypoint 2028-2029 is the U.S. Army’s coherent and holistic approach to fight and win within the Multi-Domain Operations construct. Waypoint 2028/29 provides the framework for how the total Army will fight and win in competition, crisis and conflict while simultaneously consolidating gains. The goal is to design the Army of 2028, maintaining overmatch today, while setting the conditions for future multi-domain capabilities as outlined by Army Futures Command in Aimpoint 2035. U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command plays a key role in shaping how the Army will fight by designing the Army of 2028 as a critical waypoint to meeting AFC goals of a MDO-ready force by 2035.
What are the current and past efforts of the Army?
Continuous reviews of capabilities and capacity gaps are required for the Army to execute successful operations, and win. The current review, undertaken by the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center at Fort Leavenworth, KS has identified key observations across the Warfighting Functions that need to be addressed to maintain dominance in today’s competitive environment.
What continued efforts does the Army have planned?
TRADOC will deliver an Army capable of operating across multiple domains by 2028 by bringing together the best people, ideas, equipment and facilities the Army will need to fight and win.
Why is this important to the Army?
Waypoint 2028/29 is key to the overall success of the Army’s modernization efforts. 2028 is the waypoint; a point at which the Army will comprehensively reassess the assumptions about future warfare and adjust its investments accordingly. This is key to ensuring the Army provides the nation with the MDO-capable force needed in the future.

Future conflicts will manifest at a longer range, across all domains, and at a much greater speed, both physical and cognitive. We must therefore continue to implement a 21st century talent management system, develop and field new weapon systems, transform our doctrine, build new organizations, and change the way we train.
